World’s first LED bottle cap ‘Illumicap’ to go on sale in 2016
The Kirin Group F&B company in Tokyo has partnered with WHITE design agency to create the World’s first Internet of Things (IoT) LED bottle cap.

The plastic cap has a built-in wireless system that senses and reacts to music and movement through a smartphone and illuminates the whole bottle in various colors.

'A new drinking experience for consumers'

Kirin said it developed the Illumicap to create a new drinking experience for consumers and further promote the use of the cap: ‘whose functions go far beyond those of an ordinary cap’.

The company wants to commercialize the product by the end of 2016 and WHITE will hold the license for selling it.

According to Peter Krensky, research analyst, analytics & business intelligence, Aberdeen Group, IoT is growing in recognition because of the impact it has had on business analytics and the potential that still remains untapped.

In an Internet of Things (IoT) environment, nearly every object, device, and consumer good is connected to networks and/or the public internet,” he said.

These “things” or smart objects can be individually identified, tracked, and managed, and can be connected to networks through a variety of methods.

Sensors are more affordable than ever before and prices on connected devices continue to drop. New devices and machines that transmit data come online every day and full-scale data generation from the IoT is now economically feasible.”

Removable cap with Bluetooth device

Kirin said its removable cap is installed with a Bluetooth module and an LED, emitting light downwards.

It is designed to illuminate the whole plastic bottle. By controlling the Bluetooth module, the bottle can be lit in various colors and the light can be controlled in reaction to the activities of consumers.
Consumers can enjoy real-time changes of light in three ways via a smartphone application: color, music and motion. The cap can also be synced up to a camera application to draw pictures and letters with light.

The camera sync uses the Illumicap application’s function of taking photographs in a long exposure mode to draw pictures and letters on still photos, creating an artwork of light,” a Kirin spokesman added.

Still pictures taken with the application can be uploaded from a smartphone.”
