PET launched for thick-walled European packaging

The Voridian division of Eastman Chemical Company, the world's largest supplier of polyethylene terephthalate resins for packaging, has announced the launch of Voridian PET 9921P in Europe.

The Voridian division of Eastman Chemical Company, the world's largest supplier of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resins for packaging, has announced the launch of Voridian PET 9921P in Europe.

Voridian PET 9921P is an optically enhanced version of Voridian PET 9921, a market-tested polymer with a history of use in applications including refillable bottles for carbonated beverages, large water jugs, and custom containers for pharmaceutical and cosmetic/personal care products.

The company also says that the reduced crystallisation speed of the material also makes it ideal for extruded film and thick sheet, and as a sealing layer for CPET applications.

Voridian PET 9921P is manufactured in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

"Introducing Voridian PET 9921P in Europe underscores our commitment to producing market-leading innovations in proximity to our customers," said Michael Poulsen, Voridian Polymers market manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Voridian PET 9921P combines reduced crystallisation speeds with superior processing characteristics and excellent optical quality."

Voridian PET 9921P was specially designed to bring excellent optical quality and ease of processing to thick-wall applications. The resin's properties offer package designers and converters several technical advantages. While standard PET resins may show crystallisation haze at preform thickness of over 4 mm, Voridian PET 9921P can be used to produce high-clarity preforms with wall thickness up to 8 mm. Just as important, these preforms produce clear, haze-free bottles when blown - the company claims.

The new polymer produces refillable bottles and large water jugs with superior stress-crack resistance that can withstand numerous washing cycles. Voridian PET 9921P features a high CHDM modification level that allows for lower processing temperatures, wider processing windows and increased output. According to the company, this greater processing ease can reduce the number of rejected containers in critical applications.

Voridian PET 9921P is an example of Voridian's commitment to creating innovative products that help customers improve their bottom line. "Voridian PET 9921P was developed after thorough investigation into our clients' needs," said Poulsen. "This careful attention to market demands allowed us to develop a resin for thick-wall applications that outperforms standard PET resins and helps our clients grow their business."

Voridian, a division of Eastman Chemical Company, manufactures PET, polyethylene polymers and acetate fibres and is the world's largest supplier of PET for packaging. With headquarters in the US, Voridian has about 3,400 employees in more than 15 countries worldwide. Voridian operates eight manufacturing sites in six countries - including PET manufacturing sites in Rotterdam, San Roque, Spain and Workington, England - and has two contract manufacturing sites in Asia.
