High cost of water problem in Edinburgh

Scotlands largest distiller owned NB may be forced to close due to high operating costs.

The managing director of the North British Distillery, David Rae, said that the high costs of operating in the city centre may jeaprodize the plant's future.

Operating prices in the centre of Edinburgh are high in comparison to other regions in the UK. It has been reported in the local Scottish press that the managing director said that the high costs of water is "is an increasing problem".

NB is a joint venture between spirits company Diageo and Edrington, and the venture company makes grain whisky in blends such as Johnie Walker and Grouse and Bell's.

Something in the water

After much speculation, S&N closed its Fountain brewery in Edinburgh earlier in the month. 170 people were made redundant, and the closure of the historic site has angered many ale drinkers who saw the the water used for the beverage as traditional. Trade union members that have lost their jobs claim that the company had lied to them in the past regarding the future of the plant.

NB employs 100 people at its plant. The managing director said that the company is watching the costs with great interest.
