Aseptic bag aimed at extended shelf life market

A new high-capacity aseptic plastic bag will help food processors meet the demand for extended shelf-life products in the wholesale market, according to the manufacturer.

Aseptic processing involves filling a sterilised package with a sterile food under a confined hygienic environment. Through the method processors can achieve a shelf life without the use ofpreservatives or refrigeration. Extending the shelf life of chilled products also opens new opportunities for processors by allowing them to consolidate operations and extend their distribution chain.

Aseptic processing also helps processors meet the greater demand from consumers and regulators for safe foods.

CDF's high-capacity aseptic bags are suitable for tomato juice, fruit juice and other food products that have high acidity and requireaseptic packaging. Using specialised barrier films, the bags lock out light and oxygen to extend shelf life.

The high-capacity aseptic bags can accommodate 1", 2" and 3" fillers and can be supplied with a capacity of up to 330 gallons, the company said in a statement.

Food processors have a choice of films for the bags. These include CDF's Barria, a three-layer lamination, metallised polyester that blocks moisture and oxygen.

They can be used in high-speed filling machines. The design minimise bag handling during a fill, the company claims. Fittings are available for almost every major aseptic filler machine.

The US aseptic packaging market had revenues of $4.61bn in 2004 and is forecast to grow to $5.31bn in 2011, according to Frost & Sullivan.
