Machines target market's changing demands

Sartorius has released a number of machines and tools in demand by the food industry, including a metal detector for aluminium packaging, a USB stick for collecting data on the move, a roller conveyor and a check weigher.

The new Sartorius Observer 300 is a detector designed to pick up metal in foods wrapped in aluminium-coated packaging or unstable products, without giving a false reading. Ensuring the removal of contaminants in the industry is an essential task, given new food safety regulations and the high cost of recalls if products reach the retail level.

Sartorius has also designed the Observer to monitor composite packages such as chips or ready-to-eat meals, aluminium lids on yoghurt, and blister packages of tablets.

Conventional detectors currently used in quality control in industry pick up metal by producing an alternating electromagnetic field. The Observer 300 uses a different method, delivering results without being affected by aluminium-coated packaging.

The unit is equipped with specially developed sensors that operate on the basis of magnetic field measuring technology. The Sartorius Observer 300 can be integrated into Sartoriu's ProControl quality assurance system for the Microsoft Windows platform. This ensures plants can record all incidents of metal contaminants to comply with EU regulations and directives.

Sartorius' roller conveyor is part of the company's explosion-proof weighing equipment. This is a response by Sartorius to an amendment in the EU's new guidelines, called ATEX, under which non-electrical equipment now also requires monitoring in terms of analyses of potentially hasardous ignition sources.

One such source is the static charging of conveyor rollers. To prevent this hazard, ATEX-compliance roller conveyors are equipped with an anti-static module. A brush caterpillar is in contact with the axle and pipe. This permits the static discharge between the roller and axle via the brush. In addition, surfaces must be protected against heating from rotating parts, brakes and sparks arising through friction or impact.

The stainless steel roller conveyors are available in dimensions matching the platforms of the 15kg, 60kg, 150kg und 300kg scale ranges.

The company's Synus check weigher permits the form-and-force fit connection of the transport system at the required conveyance height in the required direction. This maximises the scale's flexibility of integration into users' production lines and for future conversions, the company claims.

The cantilever weighing and conveyance system permits the changing of belts and tables through quick slackening mechanisms and fold-up, along with removable transport elements.

The modular combinations between three electronic systems and 18 weighing systems permit the scale to be adapted to almost any specification. Another feature of all Synus models is a monolithic, electromagnetic force-compensation load cell developed specially for dynamic check weighers.

The company has also produced a USB memory stick designed especially for log data archiving without a network link.

The USBPrint stick offers a solution to those manufacturers who prefer not to install a network, but wish to save data while on the move.
