European firm Sealed Air Cryovac has developed a new shelf-life
extending overwrap packaging system for manufacturers of pizza and
pasta.

The Cryovac BDF concept is a tray-wrapping system designed for coating fresh pizzas with a transparent, shrink film - preserving them in a modified atmosphere and therefore allowing them to be transported, distributed and sold with no loss of quality.

According to Cryovac, the packaging allows for fewer deliveries to customers, thereby cutting logistics costs as well as freeing up the distribution chain for expanding the market base.

In addition, the packaging is consumer-friendly with tray flexibility, high product visibility and easy opening.

The company said: "This concept offers outstanding versatility with one machine adapted to many formats and changes of products and ensures high efficiency, even for medium production runs.

"It combines pack safety and modified atmosphere technology with a high level of flexibility in accommodating a wide range of trays."

Cryovac BDF has already been successfully trialled with Polish food company Bracia Rudniks who supply fresh pizzas and ready meals to retailers such as Tesco, Carrefour and Polomarket.

The business made use of a Cryovac CJ shrink tunnel and BDF 8050 film in the production of its fresh pizza line and was eager to extend shelf life due to the distance between production plants and Warsaw supplier outlets.
