Can opening designed for aging population

A new can opening is designed to meet the needs of an aging population.

Crown's Easylift can ends are designed to make it easier for people to pull up the tab. Crown says the new can end retains all the opening performance of its flagship Eole technology. "The end's improved tab access makes it easier and faster for consumers, including seniors, children and the physically impaired, to open canned food products without using a can opener or other tools," the company stated. Easylift easy-open ends are also compatible with existing can line equipment, the company claims. Only one-off adjustments are needed, allowing brand owners to incorporate the innovative ends with no production downtime, Crown claimed. "They also continue to perform through all levels of the supply chain," the company stated. Crown's innovation was to allow a big gap between the can lid and tab for easier access to the product inside. Crown is targeting those who make ready meals, fruits and vegetables, fish, dairy and pet food. The top is available in a 73mm diameter and is manufactured in France. Crown plans to being production at additional locations in Europe and North America. Crown is currently working with Nestlé Purina Petcare Europe to trial the ends in the Netherlands. The ends are being used on Nestlé's 400g packages of cat and dog food. Once tests are completed, Nestlé Purina intends to introduce this new standard across all of its major European brands, Crown reported.
