Supplier constructs to tackle nutraceutical-bottling challenge

A manufacturer of aseptic technologies for functional and nutraceutical goods has commissioned a new bottling plant ahead of further operational expansion designed to encompass proprietary tea extraction.

Flavours Inc has announced that the new construction in Yorba Linda, South California, will be the third plant of its kind built in the last eight years to meet growing demand from the group’s national and international customers.

The company aims to use the new plant to cater for growing demand for High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging that can maintain functionality in added-value products.

Group spokesperson Tara Foster told NutraIngredients-USA.com that the new site would also house innovations in tea brewing and liquid encapsulation. Foster claims the move will allow Flavours Inc to extend its portfolio of nutraceutical ingredients and flavors as well as processing technologies.

“The tea brewing system will be constructed inside this aseptic plant for customers who want to have fresh brewed tea in their beverages that keeps all of the flavor and naturally occurring ingredients contained in the system,” she stated.

Plastic challenge

According to the company, plastic packaging varieties such as HDPE and PET can prove a challenge for aseptic functional products. However, the group claims this challenge can be overcome through a unique cold fill process.

“Due to the nature of the cold filling, the concerns consumers once had about chemicals leaching from the plastic are negated,” stated Foster. “This is an education process for consumers as well as helping them understand the upgrades in recyclability of plastic.”

The group adds that it can also work with manufacturers to determine the correct barrier properties needed in bottling specific products. Foster says that this can vary from including multi-layer materials to opting for nitrogen dosing to prevent unnecessary oxidation in a finished product.
