Ball Packaging hopes new canned wine will prove barrel of laughs

Ball Packaging Europe has created a new can design for fruit wine maker EB-Secco, which has been presented to consumers at the ProWein trade show in Düsseldorf from this week.

Ball said that wine filled in beverage cans (the EB-Secco design is pictured) opened new markets, with a target group of consumer aged 20-39 "who are not traditional wine drinkers, but like to taste new premium products which are both innovative and sustainable and have a persuasive taste".

EB-Secco's fruit and sparkling wines include cherry or currant varieties, and Ball said that packaging wine in cans offered good barrier protection, while "undesired reactions" between wine and metal had been avoided via development of a special inside lacquer.

"The small size of the aluminium Slim Can (187/200ml and 250 ml) makes it the perfect away-from-home companion, and it is ideal for single households and hotel minibars," Ball Packaging said.

Such 'miniature wine barrels' were especially convenient for airlines, trains and passenger ships, as well as worldwide export of wine, Ball said, while the product inside would never be corked.
