The announcement of the containerboard line comes on the back of a three-year, $480m investment in MWV’s integrated platform (forests, paper and packaging) to expand its businesses in Brazil.
HyPerform has been improved to make paperboard run more smoothly, increasing productivity and improving performance.
Grammage reduction
Jairo Lorenzatto, director of operations, MWV Rigesa, said the company is ‘on track to produce nearly half a million tons of HyPerform this year’.
“The HyPerform line has a better performance compared to other alternatives in the Brazilian market, since it allows a grammage reduction of up to 20% in corrugated packaging production.”
The bulk of the investment for the project was directed towards the expansion of its Três Barras mill, in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, including the acquisition of a paper machine for kraftliner production.
Lorenzatto said with these investments, the company has doubled its production capacity at Três Barras, and it has seen strong market growth in Brazil and across Latin America.
PEFC approval
The HyPerform line is certified by CERFLOR, which is under the umbrella of the PEFC forest certification system.
“The new production process at Três Barras brings environmental advantages, with a reduction of 10% in greenhouse gas emissions and 61% in water consumption, it generates 70% less water effluents and 58% less solid residues,” added Lorenzatto,.
MVW Rigesa is a company of MeadWestvaco Corporation (MWV) group, which was established in Brazil in 1942.
