A new opening for the closure? Aptar on beverage caps

Aptar Food and Beverage has a lot of ‘projects on the table’ after having products nominated for innovation awards by Emballage trade show judges.

The firm was nominated for its Micro one piece polypropylene snap on closure and a custom built dosing system with a Britvic company.

Out of 215 products registered by Emballage exhibitors, 92 were pre-selected by a committee of packaging specialists.

Of these, 48 were picked for display in the Pack Innovation area at the show and eight awards and three special prizes were given.

Karin Weibel, from Aptar, told FoodProductionDaily.com that when custom designing a product, it may take a long time but paying attention to customer demands and bringing advice and feedback from experiences in the market are key factors.

Closure and Britvic work

Micro is a flip-top stopper, with a Simplisqueeze valve, designed for the "water enhancer" segment. Simplisqueeze is made of Swimming Silicone which has a density of less than 1g, making it suitable for recycling.

It has an 18mm neck finish, 180 degree hinge and is tamper evident with a full body sleeve.

Aptar also introduced a custom-designed product with French concentrate brand Teisseire in July this year.

Aptar and Teisseire, a Britvic Group company, partnered to develop the customized dosing system made of polypropylene which allows consumers to dispense concentrate.

The specific dispensing pump, based on Aptar's HiFlow platform, delivers a 4ml dose of concentrate with each actuation and ensures no drips or spills.

It also prevents any product crystallization in the dispensing mechanism.

Weibel said it is hopeful the product, released inFrance, gives ideas to other brands in Europe.

“This is the first time that such a product comes on the market, no other brand used a pump before for dispensing syrup," she said.

“The idea is that it provides perfect dispensing of the product, it has no leaks, it can be opened easily and used by children as well.”

Cross sector experience

Weibel said when creating a product it had to pay attention to design, recycling and cited the valve made of Swimming Silicone which is compliant with the PET recycling stream.

“Aptar has experience in other segments like pharmacy and beauty and home, so on this product you may notice the design and the technology which comes from a beauty product for which it was developed initially but it has been adapted, improved and redesigned to be compliant with the viscosity and the specificity of the product.”

Today the firm has to pay attention to light-weighting and to cost reductions that companies have to face, said Weibel.

“If other companies are interested in such a product we could discuss on the design of a new pump for concentrate or other beverage or food products which already exists sometimes," she said.

“As for the concentrate as you can see it is a market that is really emerging in Europe but I think it is a growing market either for concentrates for fruit or functional concentrates which can provide vitamins and minerals. So I think that on the go products and easy to carry products is really a trend we wish to follow.”
