Shattering beer bottles spark recall of ale and cider

Shattering beer bottles have sparked the recall of glass flagons containing traditional ale and farmhouse cider.

Cottage Delight has been forced to withdraw three Staffordshire Brewery brands – Chedderton golden ale, Chedderton Christmas ale and golden cider – this week.

The speciality food producer feared the 1,000ml bottles could shatter and injure beer drinkers due to a possible fault in the glass.

Last week the firm announced the recall of only some batches of the golden cider variety. But it has since emerged that all batches and two other products were affected.

‘Products may shatter’

“The bottles containing these products might shatter,” said a notice posted on the Food Standards Agency website yesterday (October 15).

“Cottage Delight Ltd has extended the recall of its ‘Staffordshire Brewery Cheddleton Golden Ale’ to include further batches and ‘best before’ dates, and two additional products.”

Staffordshire Brewery Supplies has a high speed bottling line at its plant in Cheddleton in Leek. Founded in 2002, the firm’s ale was initially made in a garden shed and bottled in a kitchen.

In a separate case in May, the Wine Society recalled batches of Prosecco wine due to similar fears that the bottles might shatter.

Spice paste recall

Earlier this month Verstegen Spices & Sauces UK recalled spice paste became some packs may contain korma paste which included cashew nuts.

The potential presence of cashews was not mentioned on the packaging and posed a risk to anyone who suffered from an allergy to tree nuts.

The recall affects 80ml packs of Kumar's Rendang Spice Paste and Kumar's Besengek Spice Paste. The use by dates fell in March 2016.
