The beverage will be available in three flavors (mixed berry, pineapple coconut, and pink grapefruit) for a suggested retail price of £2.50 ($3.30), with each drink containing 80mg of omega-3 EPA DHA.
In conjunction with its beverage launch, the company is also introducing Omega Squeeze, a range of flavors offering 750mg to 1500mg of omega-3 EPA DHA per 10ml/15ml serving. Omega Squeeze is ideal for mixing into smoothies, shakes, and cereals, the company said.
As an avid athlete, CEO Marcus Mollinga noticed a need for a product like OMEGAWATER when completing physical therapy a couple of years ago.
“While going through rehab, it became apparent I needed supplements to help aid my body through recovery. I was advised a great supplement to prevent inflammation is omega-3 EPA/DHA, so I started taking omega-3 capsules, which I found helped aid my recovery. However they were unpleasant to swallow, inconvenient and gave me ‘fishy burps’,” he said.
After teaming up with a biotechnological company specializing in food and beverage technologies, Mollinga was able to develop OMEGAWATER and Omega Squeeze products.
The company is targeting health conscious individuals, millennials, athletes, and young professionals “who are generally happy to pay a little bit more for a product that they know is going to do them some good,” Mollinga told BeverageDaily.
OMEGAWATER makes 32 health claims and in order to meet the requirements of making those particular claims, the company was required to contain 30% of the RDA per 100ml for vitamins A,D,E and 80mg of omega-3 EPA DHA, Mollinga said.
According to Mollinga, OMEGAWATER offers a convenience, hydration, and a high level of nutrition that omega-3 or other food supplements cannot match.
Encapsulation technology
“Omega-3s as well as Vitamin A,D, and E are incredibly hard to mix with water as they are water insoluble. We use patented nano encapsulation technology which encapsulates the water insoluble omega-3 into water soluble micelles,” he said.
The technology allowed the company to mask the taste and scent usually associated with omega-3 products, and allows for a one-year shelf life.
