Alcohol featured heavily in the second monthly report on food fraud and authenticity by the Joint Research Centre (JRC).

The round-up from the European Commission service covered counterfeit vodka which led to deaths in Ukraine, table grape must seized in Puglia, Italy and grape must without documentation confiscated in Portugal.

India featured twice – once for food stalls using unauthorized dyes in dishes and rasgulla, a dessert made from milk, containing adulterated milk and unauthorized chemicals.

Mislabelled seafood in Italy was uncovered as part of the “Fortitude” and “Pesce d’Ottobre” operations.

It reflects media coverage in October and not the frequency of fraud in a country and/or concerning a product.

The summary presents articles in the media, from the Medical Information System (MedISys), the JRC-developed internet monitoring and analysis tool, based on the Europe Media Monitor and the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) portal.
