Ball Corporation will cease production at its beverage packaging plant in Cuiabá, Brazil: transferring production to its 13 other plants in South America.

Ball is the largest manufacturer of aluminum beverage cans in Brazil.

The Cuiabá plant opened in 1998 and employs around 70 people. Carlos Pires, president, Ball Beverage Packaging South America, said: "Absorbing this one line can plant into Ball's remaining network of 13 plants in South America allows us to reduce our cost structure while continuing to effectively and efficiently supply our customers with the most sustainable package in the beverage supply chain”.

Some Cuiabá employees will be transferred to other Ball locations. Affected employees will receive benefits and outplacement services in accordance with legal requirements.

Ball announced in February it will build a beverage can and end manufacturing plant in Paraguay, with construction due to begin in the fourth quarter of 2019. It is also adding capacity to its facility in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
