What’s piquing the attention of BeverageDaily readers? A round-up of our most-read news from April shows interest in Coca-Cola’s latest creation; a consideration of sustainability certifications, and cutting-edge NPD.
We take a look at the articles that have cat-tured the attention of our readers over the last month.
This year Coca-Cola launched Coca-Cola Creations: a project that seeks to make sure the 136-year-old brand remains relevant to today’s Gen Z consumers.
April saw the launch of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Byte: a drink which ‘brings the flavor of pixels to life in a limited-edition beverage that transcends the digital and physical worlds’
According to the team, the drink’s bright, upfront taste is reminiscent of powering up a game, and its refreshing finish makes for a perfect gaming companion. Packaging graphics also feature pixels forming the Coca-Cola logo.
(What does it taste like, we hear you ask. We haven’t tried it but others have: ‘it tasted kind of like grape flavoring’; says one review; ‘it tastes like a sweeter and smokier cola’ says another: or - less dramatic - ‘it still tasted like a Coke Zero’ concluded another).
What if alcohol had to display tobacco-like health warnings on labels? That’s the question researchers in Scotland took on in their study, results of which have now been published.
Large pictorial or text warnings in particular may help to counteract the appeal and social acceptability of alcohol products, while increasing awareness of risks. Such warnings could, therefore, lead to a reduction in consumption and related harms, suggests the Scottish study.
Wine industry professionals would like to see a unique, strong sustainability standard that can be clearly communicated to consumers, according to a survey commissioned by Prowein (which, by the way, is coming up quickly and opens on May 15 in Dusseldorf after a pandemic hiatus).
While many winemakers already incorporate more sustainable practices into their processes, communicating these is no simple task.
Diageo has relaunched Astral Tequila: a product it gained as part of its acquisition of Davos in 2020.
The drink now boasts ‘‘beautiful and timeless new packaging, a new and unique recipe produced at a new distillery that results in a new liquid, and new marketing initiatives’.
Christina Choi, Senior Vice President of Tequila, Diageo North America, told us that super premium tequila is seeing particularly strong growth in the booming tequila category.
Last month Constellation Brands announced it had fully acquired Texas RTD cocktail brand Austin Cocktails, having previously made an investment in the company in 2018.
Austin Cocktails was founded in 2014 while the RTD alcohol category was still relatively small: and has been riding the wave of the growing trend ever since.
Given the boom in RTD alcohol, it's no surprise to see Constellation wanting a slice of the action. (Watch out also for its launch of Fresca spirit-based RTD cocktails with Coca-Cola)
