Monterey Wine second firm to purchase UK-built paper drinks bottle machine
The Ipswich-based company has now sold two of its machines, after coming to a deal with Canadian firm KinsBrae Packaging in June 2022.
Once installed, the Frugal Bottle Assembly Machine will make paper bottles for MWC's range of products, enabling the winemaker to reduce carbon emissions by cutting down on the use of glass.
Frugal Bottles are made from 94% recycled paperboard and weigh 83g when empty. This makes them five times lighter than glass with a carbon footprint that is six times lower.
MWC produces 80% of all US wines made in California and can now make and fill wine bottles on-site. While Frugalpac has only exported two bottle machine, its bottles are used in 25 countries around the world. Almost two million have produced since 2020.
“We are very proud to be the first US company to produce the revolutionary paper Frugal Bottle," said MWC director of personnel and finance general manager Shannon Valladarez.
“Drinks brands around the world are looking to decarbonise and the bottle accounts for up to 50% of a wine’s carbon footprint. By moving to our Frugal Bottle, they will be able to slash the bottle’s carbon footprint by 84% and that’s a huge game changer."
Frugalpac CEO Malcolm Waugh said that the sale was not only a big moment for the company, but also for the US drinks industry.
"Now American wine and spirits brands will be able to buy and fill paper bottles made in America for the first time," Waugh added.
“Our Frugal Bottle and Frugal Bottle Assembly Machine offers a really simple and cost-effective way for wineries and spirits producers to radically cut their bottle’s carbon footprint at a stroke. They will also be able to use 360-degree branding to achieve maximum shelf stand out in stores."
