A fifth of Americans plan to cut back on alcohol. What’s motivating them to drink less?
The first part of this series highlighted insights from UK mindful drinking movement Club Soda. Now, newly-published research from The New Consumer and Coefficient Capital focuses on US consumers.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) has, together with Aboitiz Equity Ventures, entered into a Letter of Intent to jointly acquire Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines from The Coca-Cola Company.
Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) was formed via Coca-Cola European Partners’ acquisition of Coca-Cola Amatil in 2021: covering key markets such as Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. The proposed acquisition of Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines for $1.8bn would further build on this expansion.
The acquisition would position the company as the world’s largest Coca-Cola bottler by both revenue and volume. The Philippines is the second largest market in Southeast Asia: with a large and growing population (the country’s 115m people make it the 13th largest globally with around 1.5% per annum population growth).
Cannabis and consumer packaged goods company Tilray Brands made two high-profile acquisitions last month.
The first was the acquisition of eight craft beer and beverage brands form Anheuser-Busch: namely Shock Top, Breckenridge Brewery, Blue Point Brewing Company, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, Redhook Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewing, Square Mile Cider Company, and HiBall Energy. The $85m transaction includes current employees, breweries and brewpubs associated with the brands.
“These beer and beverage brands possess the hallmarks of strong consumer loyalty and further diversify Tilray’s growing US beverage alcohol segment,” said Tilray as it announced the deal.
At the end of August, Tilray announced it would acquire the remaining 57.5% equity ownership of Truss Beverage Co from Molson Coors Canada: positioning it as the leader in adult-use cannabis beverages in Canada with brands such as XMG, Mollo, House of Terpenes, and Little Victory (which contain THC and CBD in varying proportions).
Where should low and no alcohol drinks sit on supermarket shelves? UK supermarket Waitrose is working with Diageo to trial new ‘bold, dedicated areas’ for low and no alcohol drinks in 253 shops across the country.
The introduction of dedicated areas means 60% more space will be given to low and alcohol-free drinks.
Waitrose stocks a range of 70 low and alcohol-free drinks from beer and cider, to wines and spirits. Over the past year sales of low alcohol and alcohol-free drinks have grown by 20% at Waitrose, with sales of beer continuing to grow the fastest.
