Special Brew review: Carlsberg ponders 9% ABV change
The beer and beverage business has committed to the government’s Public Health Responsibility Deal, which wants to encourage responsible drinking.
Bruce Ray, corporate affairs director, Carlsberg UK, said, “It is clearly down to individual consumers how they drink our products, but to help create this responsible drinking environment, we will be reviewing our portfolio and withdrawing any single-serve cans containing over four units of alcohol from sale during 2015.”
Special Brew – with an ABV of 9% - is currently available in 500ml, 440ml, and 275ml servings (the 500ml can currently contains 4.5 units, and is the only size that does not comply with the pledge).
Carlsberg said no decisions have yet been made review but options include changing the serve size, the packaging of the product, or the ABV.
Changes will be made by autumn 2015.
