Under the new brand FERMY, American biotech startup The EVERY Co. and Canadian functional beverage and supplement business Landish launched protein and adaptogen-infused coffee enhancer and matcha latte mixes today.

Combining the EVERY Company’s animal-free egg white protein made via precision fermentation and Landish Foods’ expertise in nutritional wellness products, FERMY products will deliver 8 grams of protein per serving for the Protein Coffee Enhancer and Protein Matcha Latte products.

EVERY’s “tasteless, highly soluble [and] ‘invisible’ protein,” can be added to any beverage, which prompted Landish to approach the company for a collaboration, Lance Lively, VP and general manager, EVERY Company, told FoodNavigator-USA.

The mixes also will contain functional ingredients like MCT and lion’s mane mushroom to “cater to the growing demand among consumers for easy-to-access, clean, sustainable protein paired with brain-boosting benefits,” according to a joint statement.

“Our new line of FERMY products supports our customers’ health-first lifestyles by providing a functional, protein-dense beverage that is superior in flavor and texture, while also being sustainably produced,” Daniel Novak, CEO, Landish Foods, said in the same statement.

Ready to mix powders that can ‘seamlessly integrate into coffee and other beverages’

EVERY uses precision fermentation to develop animal-free, soluble egg proteins for its beverage applications without impacting taste or texture, according to the company.

The ready-to-mix powders can “seamlessly integrate into coffee and other beverages,” Lively said.

Lively cited the growing functional coffee trend, particularly “profee” (protein + coffee) on TikTok and the popularity of Dutch Bros’ high protein hot and cold coffees, as part of the impetus for the collaboration.

As consumers seek convenient nutrition during the morning rush, coffee serves as an ideal vehicle to pack in protein on the go, Lively added.

“Coffee is the perfect vehicle for EVERY’s ultra-clean-tasting protein. Coffee is a vital part of many people’s daily rituals … [and] commonly consumed in the morning, which is a time of day that is often rushed. A convenient boost of protein in the morning is exactly what is needed to start the day off right, especially when people do not have time to prepare a full protein-rich meal,” he said.

FERMY products are now available at fermy.co.

Will at-home coffee consumption influence a fourth wave of coffee culture?

According to a 2022 Mintel report, consumers, especially those working remotely, have increased coffee consumption at home giving rise to more experimentation and interest in recipe ideas, primarily via social media.

Mintel even suggests that the rise of at-home consumption and experimentation (coupled with economic uncertainty and inflation) could potentially shift the coffee culture into a fourth wave, which will be centered around the home instead of foodservice.

Additionally, as Gen Z consumers continue building their buying power, coffee and functional coffee brands can provide appealing products through flavors, functionalities like cognitive or energy support.
