Developing solutions to fight food fraud
Adulteration of food proteins - as seen in the recent melamine scandal - is becoming a greater threat to industry as the food supply has become more globalized and economic crisis drives manufacturers to seek cheaper ingredients, says Jim Griffiths of US Pharmacopeia.

US Pharmacopeia is holding a workshop to address the issue next month, bringing together experts from across the food industry to seek the best ways to prevent adulterated food from entering the food supply.

Griffiths said that the aim is to develop a toolbox of analytical solutions applicable to different sectors of the industry.

The food protein workshop takes place in Rockville, Maryland on June 16 and 17, 2009.
