Toppan Printing is to build a transparent barrier film production plant in Georgia, USA with start-up expected in March 2016.

It will be the company’s first transparent barrier film manufacturing site outside Japan and expand the capacity to serve North America and Europe to grow the overseas barrier film business.

Toppan said it is anticipating demand for barrier films will grow in the North American market, where structural shifts in the food packaging industry are leading to for longer shelf lives brought by changes in lifestyles, and a switch from glass bottles and metal cans to flexible packaging.

The firm will target total sales of 100bn yen in fiscal 2018 for its transparent barrier film-related business.

Investment in the 10,555 square metre building area is 10bn yen for a total site area of 145,667 square metres.
