Tequila threats - and agave alternatives
The growing popularity of tequila is putting supply under pressure – particularly given that the spirit must come from a set, legally protected area in Mexico.
But a number of entrepreneurs see the opportunity to drive forward agave alternatives. That could be spirits created in Mexico from outside the tequila areas, or efforts in the US, South Africa and Australia to grow agave and create a similar spirit.
As this project in Australia says: “We have the opportunity to focus on quality… respecting the traditions of the past, but not being bound by them.”
